There are a wide range of telemetry options within New Zealand for retrieving data from, and communicating with weather stations and other dataloggers. We are able to select different communication systems depending on terrain, location and coverage. We do not favour any one network, but select the most suitable option. Our equipment and expertise enable us to use combinations of telemetry to gain cost advantages and solve problems.
Landline Telephone
Requires dedicated line connection to datalogger (some line sharing functions may be possible with additional hardware). Easily accessed by anyone running software on a PC with modem. Low power requirements.
Campbell Scientific - Use COM220 Modem or COM320 for Voice Messages
Cellular 021 Network (Vodafone)
Requires 021 coverage at site. Easily accessed by anyone running software on a PC with modem. Low power requirements. Low data costs (typically <$20 mth + call cost).
Campbell Scientific - Use Wavecom Cell-Modem
Cellular 027 Network (Telecom)
Requires 027 coverage at site. Easily accessed by anyone running software on a PC with modem. Low power requirements. Low data costs (typically <$20 mth + call cost).
Campbell Scientific - Uses IPort Modem
Spread Spectrum Radio (short range)
Spread Spectrum radio is a license free radio system suitable for networks of dataloggers. The radios spread the normally narrowband information signal over a relatively wide band of frequencies in the 922MHz range. There are no data retrieval costs as for phone networks. Up to 15km line of sight depending on site and aerial. Low power.
Campbell Scientific - Use RF411 or RF450 radio. CR211 datalogger includes spread spectrum radio
WeatherHawk - Spread spectrum option
Analogue VHF/UHF Radio (long range)
Standard licensed radio networks are suitable for remote sites where cellular or land line systems are not feasible or practical. Radio sites tend to be more expensive and power hungry than phone systems. Can be used with repeaters or with a combination of phone - radio links.
Campbell Scientific - Uses radio, antenna and radio modem at station with radio and base station at office.
Satellite
For remote sites or ocean buoys where other telemetry options are not available. Data is sent via the satellite network to a data centre, where it is distributed to the subscribed user(s). Data charged on volume.
