Lufft's IRS21 Intelligent Road Surface Sensor is a passive sensor embedded in the monitored road surface, flush with the surface, to provide measurements of actual road conditions. The IRS21 is a primary component of our Road Weather Information Stations (RWIS). Two IRS21 sensors are typically installed at each measurement site.
Features
In our RWIS stations, the IRS21s are interfaced to a CR1000 or CR10X datalogger via the 18080 Lufft interface and the SDM-SIO4.
The IRS21 is shipped with a 75 ft (25 m) cable attached. Customers who wish to lengthen the cable should take care to ensure that the spliced cable is of the same quality as the original and that the splice itself is impervious to the elements.
Specifications
The IRS21 measures the following parameters:
Road surface temperature
Water film level (up to 4 mm)
Freezing temperature for NaCl (others on request)
Road condition (dry/damp/wet/ice or snow/residual salt/freezing)
The sensors use radar techniques to measure water film.
